Compartimos: Rethinking Shared Stewardship
November 15, 2024
Capital Gallery, Washington, DC
Compartimos: Rethinking Shared Stewardship builds off of the Smithsonian’s Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns Values and Principles Statement published in 2022. Although the statement directly responded to the physical custody, rights, and access of Smithsonian collections, Compartimos puts relationships at the heart of shared stewardship as opposed to the art object.
The exhibition presents the work of three young artists working out of East Los Angeles: Josiah O’Balles, Anthony (Tony) Valentino, and Sophia Garcia. Compartimos imagines collection managers in direct conversation with young artists, working to craft a toolkit to preserve their work and legacy for their communities.
This exhibition was presented as a final project for the Latino Museum Studies Program sponsored by the National Museum of the American Latino.
